The term "Photojournalism" simply is a combination of "photography"
& "Journalism"
, Photos & written words. The photography part is much more effective and have the
greatest impact on people. To see something with your own eyes is by far not
like to read or to hear about it. Like the Arabic common say goes : "elli shaf
mosh zay elli seme3" "Who saw, is not like who heard"
It has been medically and scientifically proven that visual sense is the more effective
on humans than other senses.
And that's what gives the visual image its powerful impact in telling the news, yet
dangerous if manipulated or misused.
Would 9/11 attack have had the same effect on people who saw it if it hadn't
been visual. Would the United States war on terrorism have been that easy and
justified without the photos of the collapsing towers?
Think of how much difference it would have been if El Salam ferry boat had
been visually broadcasted while bursting into fire with more than 1000 helpless people aboard eventually
sinking in one freezing night in the middle of the Red-sea instead of just hearing about
it. Although everyone got angry and the general mood of the people was down, yet
they kept "watching" the African Cup of Nations and eventually celebrated
winning the cup on streets like never before.
What you see with your eyes, is what will have the optimum effect on you.
And for that very reason, photojournalists who are covering crises and wars, are
significantly more likely to experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and
depression than reporters, and would be in mass need of professional mental
help.
Part of what photojournalists and war correspondents face.
The power of photography dramatically expands to epitomize themes, major
events or even a whole era that nations once lived, into one photo!
Do you feel any need for captions to the photos below..
The capability of photography to freeze and capture a spectacular moment in life to
keep it visually alive with all its accompanied memories in the eye of the beholder, is
one of its greatest and superb aspects that no other language or tool can do.
